Why do people assume that sugar gliders and flying squirrels are the same thing?
Sugar Gliders = Marsupial
Flying Squirrels = Rodent

If I name my flying squirrel Sugar Glider, they are the same thing. Anyway … thank you for the info.

Because people don’t know what they really are.
I love sugar gliders. They are so soft. Until they pee on my shoulder.

Because many people are ignorant and ambivalant about certain subjects. This is not reflective of their overall intelligence but your question is.
For instance, why would a zoologist get mad at somebody calling a capuchin or ostrich an african mammal. They would simply acknowledge most people don’t care if they know the answer or not.

Ignorance and lack of information. Being that they look similar can throw the ignorant off. But they are completely different animals.

My glider kids have been called all kinds of things. Most people just can’t make the relation between them and marsupials – when I’m showing them to someone I have to use a flying squirrel as an example to what they can do with the gliding membrane. They never remember anyways, always say “you know, those uh… uh, flying uh… bat monkey things!”…
