  3. Although I have been lucky and never have had them in the house, they have been in my yard and shed. They are not only a nuisance, but in my area we have a bubonic plague warning concerning our ever growing rat population. I had no luck with the sticky blocks and traps either they are too smart for those. You can buy these boxes that they can get into, but not out of at the Lowes home improvement center. I also found the TomCat poision works really well. You absolutely have to find where he is getting into the house. In our neighborhood here are the culprits:

The roof – rats jump from bushes and trees that are close to the house on to the roof and have gotten inside people’s homes because they didn’t have animal guards on the vents Prune trees and bushes away from the house to close their superhighway into your home.

Up the gutters to the roof entering through vents up there. Use animal guards like hardtack to block the end of the gutter and again at the top

The hot water heater vent – ours are located in the garage and have a vent behind it for air circulation. Some of my neighbor’s did not have hardtack placed behind the vent allowing them access to the garage and into the house from there

The dryer vent – there is an animal guard up inside of that which becomes dislodged. I had hubby check ours only to discover it had slipped off and was only attached on one side. Rats can enter through a quarter sized opening

Soffit vents along the roof line. Rats can walk straight up stucco and our homes have vents up in the facia below the roof that look like little bird house holes or on my house little slats with no screening or screening that had too large of holes.

With the weather starting to get colder those varments seek warmth and a home, shed or garage give the perfect habitat for their disgusting little lives. I also found eliminating water sources, bird feeders, picking up veggies, fruits and berries as soon as they are ripe took away their food source from the yard. You have to do the same inside the house, like pick up the dog food right after he eats it. I totally sympathsize with you wood rats are mutants, grow huge and are mean as snot. Remember, when you see one there are 20 more that you don’t…
