Oh I love those little animals! When they are babies you can either purchase or make a pouch that you can carry around your neck and next to you so that they get used to you from their “babyhood”. When they are babies you can have a smaller cage but for their best care, be prepared to build a big one and if you handle them a lot you can let them out for exercise. They are sensitive to sunlight because they are night critters and so don’t take them out in bright sunlight.
Get a book on them and pay particular attention to their diet. There are certain things they need in their diet in the right balance to keep them healthy. Every day we fixed our sugargliders a few gourmet meals, twice a day. They got millworms (live fresh ones that they ate like candy canes..), crickets with this powdered stuff on them that was necessary for their dietary balance, we cut fresh papaya or mango, you can get food formulated for sugar gliders at an exotic animal place and some PetSmart stores sell it. They had a juice we added to their water, don’t remember what it was, but something special and they loooved fruit loops for a treat.
Oh they are such cute animals! Ours would glide and land on us and they stand up like little racoons and bark and scream waving their little hands if they get upset. At night when they play, they bark and screech some.
Diet is a key factor, that and keeping their cage real clean, in them living a long life.
our 2 are named “Banshee” and “George”

Please please do not buy a book on these guys – any literature out there is regarding wild sugar gliders, not captive and is likely horribly outdated. They aren’t as popular as some animals, like ferrets and cats, so there is so much more to learn about them before a proper care book can possibly be written. With that said…:
Go to http://www.sugarglider.net . it is a forum of owners and prospective owners of gliders – I’ve found this to be THE best source of info. They give you the good, bad and ugly of owning one/two/six gliders and are so completely helpful. I currently own five and I learned more from these people than my vet! She didn’t know squat about them except for what was in an 8 year old text book.
A single glider needs a cage AT LEAST 3 feet tall, and it needs to be cleaned almost daily. They don’t have a scent unless their cage isnt cleaned properly. There are many diets out there for them that are “proven”, as in approved by vets and used by many healthy gliders. I use a mix called BML – about every other week I blend baby food, honey, egg, wheat germ, apple juice and some vitamin suppliments and freeze it along with frutis and vegtables every night.
They can be sweet and rotten at the same time! I have 5 total, and I have one that is so tame he rides in my bra all day while he sleeps. I then have another that has just never liked me, but with tons of patients she is slowly coming around and is taking treats from me. They can be noisy at night, so mine are housed in the other room.
They take alot of effort, but if you’re up for it they are sooo rewarding!
owned by 5 suggies!
