Oh My Gosh you are getting a Sugar Glider!?
    Congradulations!
I own three Sugar Gliders and they are one of my most prised pet posessions! lol. Although not posessions as I do my best to keep them healthy and busy!
Well first of all you know that Suggies are nocturnal and will sleep most of the day when you want to play…
    (They are amazing creatures..Aren’t they..)
But amazing creatures aren’t everything, suggies are known to carry diseases such as Sallmonilla or however you spell it but you shouldn’t worry, if you wash your hands after handling it and it doesnt relieve itself in your mouth accidently or by some way then you should be fine! They are gorgeous creatures but although they can glide, it is rare that you will see them do this as they need a lot of room to glide. lol
And they are not for everyone, their complex diets are hard and expensive to follow but you can do it! They are deffinately not as hard as my monkeys! lol.
    Congrats and Good Luck Darlin!

  2. My best friend owns two of them and I sugar glider-sit for them whenever she is out of town, so I should be able to help. ;)

They are very sweet, quirky animals. They love mealworms, fruit, and Roger and Luna (my friend’s two gliders) adore cherry tomatoes. I generally slice up lots of different kinds of fruit for them, along with eggs, mealworms, etc.

One thing that is both amusing and exasperating is that Roger thinks it is great fun to throw his worms at my cats whenever they get too close. ;)

They can be nippy when not handled regularly from the time they are babies, so prepare to spend LOTS of time with them. Whenever you are home, let them out, let them sit in your shirt-pocket or a little pouch made for them so that they can take naps, ‘glider-proof’ some rooms in your house so that they can dart around, jumping from object to object, and just play with them and love on them as much as you can. There really is no set limit for the amount of time you should spend, but I’d say two hours per day or more.

As far as toys go, dangly fishing pole-type toys, particularly cat toys seem to be the favorite. They love trying to catch them. Wheels, bird toys, branches and ladders are all good choices as well.
Housing should be relatively large, at least two feet by two feet by three or four feet high for a pair, but with small enough bars that they can’t fit through.

One thing though, do yourself a favor and keep their cage somewhere that isn’t your bedroom. They are nocturnal, and will bark, squeak, play on their toys, and make noise all night.

They are wonderful, interesting, sweet tempered pets if they are raised right, but you’ll still want to do a lot of research (which it sounds like you are already doing) to make sure that all of their quirks, traits, and needs fit your lifestyle. Here is a great website that has a lot of information on them, their care, and maintenance.

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions whatsoever on the subject; feel free to message me and I will be more than happy to assist you. :)

    Good luck!

    Designated sugar glider-sitter.
