We have two cats and I’m looking to get a pair of sugar gliders. I don’t anticipate a problem as I can easily keep the two separated, but I was just wondering if anyone had any advice about having the two in the same house. Thanx!

we have both, we dont let the gliders and the cats together, when the gliders and the cats are together the gliders are inside a ball running around, we also have a tent to put the gliders in so they can get more exercize. the cat doesnt act like it would hurt the gliders but it is hard to take that chance

It totally depends on the disposition of the cats. If the cats have always been indoors, sometimes they don’t even know that small animals are prey. You can see pictures all over the internet of cats sitting with mice, birds, and lots of other kind of animals that outdoor cats would kill. If your cats are indoor cats only and have been since being a kittens then I suggest that get the scent of the sugar glider all over your hands and then let the cats smell your hands, one cat at a time. Watch their reaction. If they shows no interest, try holding the sugar glider securely in your hands (be really ready to pull your hands back if the cat looks like she’s going to swat or bite) and let them sniff one at a time. You can pretty much take it from there but keep it slow. The sugar glider, as you can imagine, is at a complete disadvantage. Either the cats will tolerate it or not. It’s probably best to still keep them separated anyway but it will ease your mind a lot if you know that your cats probably won’t eat the sugar glider if they accidentally got loose together.

I’m glad your considering getting a pair of sugar gliders since I’ve heard that 1 will probably not survive alone. I would keep the sugar gliders in a seperate room from the cats and make sure you never leave them alone with the cats; you know how curious cats are and they might decide to try to chase them or hurt them.

Worked for me … I kept them separated, but when they did accidently get together nothing happened … the cats were curious and playful, but not predators.

I agree that it totally depends on your cat’s disposition. I have 5 sugar gliders and 3 cats – my gliders are all housed in the front room and the cats have the run of the house. whenever I do tent time with my gliders, the cats are shut in the bedroom in case one of them decides to escape (which they are good at!). My cats are also chickens and probably wouldn’t know what to do with a moving “toy”, but better safe than sorry!
I think if your cats are mellow and you have a secure cage, you should be fine. If you are able to house the sugar glider cage in a room the cats don’t have access to at night, it is a plus as some gliders are stressed out by having a predator so near.
