Sugar Glider Joey problem! Help!?

I have 3 sugar gliders that I had bought in June 2007. I bought two 1 year old boy and girl and one baby one that was only about 3 or 4 months old so I never got to care for that one as it was being born. The mommy sugar glider always follows my fingers on the cage when I move them around, and just now I noticed her pouch opened and I have never seen it opened before..does that mean the Mommy could possibly have a joey in there? I have checked her out for 2 days though I have been busy for the past 2 days. The mommy and male are not neutered and able to reproduce. Any suggestions or advice or tips?

  1. well are there any lumps on her stomach? keep an eye on her for the next two weeks and if you see a lump or one lump on either side of her pouch whole that means she does have a joey in there, inspect the cage joeys literally fall out of the pouch it has happend twice to my sugar glider before, it was very sad. if she has one lump she has one joey if she has two lumps she has two joeys, google it and learn as much as you can there are some really good websites out there, hold on a couple of minutes and i will ty and find them, they will tell you how to take care of the mama and the joey(s).

ADD: this is my favorite site it has helped a bunch!! I can’t find the other websites but this should help out, Goodluck! and tell me how it all works out. http://www.suzsugargliders.com

  2. Not sure about sugar gliders exactly, but wombats and roos babies start off about the size of a grain of rice so maybe you just can’t see the babies yet?

As the first person posted, http://www.suzsugargliders.com is a wonderful site, and the owner of that site is a regular on http://www.sugarglider.net . Suz has helped me out sooo much – last June my gliders had twins and I almost lost my boy Echo, he had to be hand raised for 6 weeks until he was weaned. It was rough, but Suz walked me through most of it.

A more pronounced pouch can definitely mean she’s pregnant, but it could also mean many other things like weight gain/loss, pouch infection, overgrooming, etc.

Will your girl let you handle her? When my mom glider was sleeping during the day, I was able to pet and rub her all over, and was able to GENTLY feel to either side of her pouch (too much pressure will dislodge the baby from the teat, and it will not be able to reattach) to determine if she was pregnant. They can actually hide it well, so it may be a few weeks before you can be sure. I think at 4 weeks in pouch, it felt like she had a frozen pea – I didn’t know she had twins until they were about 7 weeks along. They come out of pouch at about 8-9 weeks old, and then nurse for another 8-12 weeks.

Raising joeys can be tough, and losing them even harder. As soon mine were old enough, all 3 of my boys were nuetered and now they’re completely content and one big happy family!

I hope this helps, and feel free to message me if you have questions!
