This is interesting because it makes you wonder… did you get this glider as a baby or was this glider already grown & bonded with another?? See I have 6 suggies, 1 is very mean because he was an adult already bonded with another person & does not trust me or any one else, but we have lots of time to get used to each other. A trick I do is ad a sock into their cage or a small shirt with my scent to his cage, I also start handing him treats. It takes time for an animal to get used to someone, and you have all the time in the world to bond. You also might making sure your suggie has another companion with him or her, this way he/she is not alone while it takes time for you to bond. They can get very lonely. A bonding pouch is another good way, you leave it open in the cage with sunflower seeds or another tasty treat inside, then carefully lift it out and slip it around your neck when he/she is inside. Put the glider in pouch between you & your shirt, they will surely get used to your scent after a while, do thjis for quite a while, then slowely introduce treats with your hand. All this will take time… so be paitent and love your suggie no matter what. Also look around at diffrent sites, suncoast gliders are very informitive and have staff on hand to help you with your suggie. I hope this helps a little.

Sugar gliders are very independant and don’t always like to be held. Bonding can be a slow process sometimes, it just depends on the glider. I have five, and one of them bonded to me almost instantly while my first two girls are still learning to trust me.

It’s very important not to rush him, just give him time and don’t give him anything to be afraid of (like chasing after him to try and hold him). A bonding pouch is a very useful tool and will help immensely – also, a fun thing to try is “tent time”. Buy a small kids tent you can set up in your house (got mine at target, $25). Bring in some toys like feathers and let him run around and play with you in the tent. While he’s up and playing he most definitely wont want to be held, but you’ll gain his trust by letting him use you as a tree .

A forum that has been very helpful to me is http://www.sugarglider.net – they have many bonding threads to help you out, and if you have a question you’ll have several answers within minutes usually.

Hi Josh…consider using and wearing a bonding pouch to first get him acclimated to your scent and your voice before handling him with your hands. You don’t want to force the introduction too quickly rather gradually. While he’s in the pouch offer him some treats so he gets accustomed to see your hands when you deliver the treats. Doing this over time he may come around and begin to learn your hands are friendly and safe to touch and explore. Have patience as this is the best way to get gliders to learn to trust you.
