Sugar Glider?

I have been thinking of getting a pair of sugar gliders for some time. I have done a lot of research on them and I have yet to find any serious downsides. I would like to take in a couple that are in need of attention and a little older. I don’t want them for breeding reasons. If there is anyone that can tell me anything that I should know before I make my final decision I would appriciate it. Thanks

  2. My cousin had some, they are noisy as all getup at night. If you have a different room to keep them in at night, then they are not bad.

  3. yeah they are horrible pets, they stink, and they never stop pissing!!! They don’t like to be held or played with, so basically you got these things that sit in a cage all day and smell like piss…..I wouldn’t get one if I was you

  4. I still don’t understand why this question is in Reptiles, but ok. Um, sugar gliders are very expensive and hyper, just to let you know. Be prepared to spend hundreds of dollars on a pair!

  6. unless you are really set on getting sugar gliders, i would check out some other pets. they are mean and will bite you if possible, also they smell really bad and their cage needs to be cleaned a lot. if you want a more loving, nice, non-smelly pet, i would get gerbils or a hampster.

  8. I have four and while I do love them, they have been an extreme amount of trouble and problems. They are very expensive, they do smell bad, sometimes they are not able to be trained and can be VERY mean, and they are A LOT of work. Their bodies are extremely sensitive and everything has to be perfect. They’re also really, really hard to bond to if they havent known you since they were babies. I would strongly advise a different pet.

  9. Sugar gliders make awesome pets if you’re prepared to be a commited owner. They don’t have an odor themselves, but yeah, their urine stinks so you have to clean the cage often. It’s best to get a pair of young gliders that are hand tame. Not all gliders are mean, they’re simply not all used to human contact.. So if you’re looking for an older pair.. well, maybe you should rethink that since this will be your first time owning gliders. If you’re willing to spend LOTS and LOTS of time with your sugar gliders, I say go for it.

I can’t believe some of the ignorant negative responses here! Yes, sugar gliders do have some downsides but most of what has been listed here is pure crap except maybe two answers. It can be hard to locate a vet nearby that is willing to treat them and is knowledgeable – the nearest one to me is about 3 hours away. They only really smell if their cage isn’t clean or they are on an unhealthy diet. They can be hard to bond with, but each glider is different so one may bond within days, and another will not bond for years. I see nothing wrong with adopting an older pair for your first – my first pair was a mother daughter pair, about 2 years and a year old. My 3rd was a baby, and he still hasn’t completely warmed up to me, but the older girls adjusted well and right away.

There is just so much info to know about these guys – I say if you’ve done your research and are prepaired, go for it! It can be an emotional roller coaster at times (he loved me yesterday, so why is he crabbing at me today!?!?) but the end product is well worth it if you’re willing to spend hours a day with them.

I would highly recommend going to this forum http://www.sugarglider.net – they can answer just about any question, and everyone i’ve encountered there is helpful and friendly. Good luck!
