Well, boy rats smell more than girls. They pee more, too. And they get bigger. They also are prown to fight a lot amongst themselves (this should normally be ignored, they will sqeak to get attention and let the other know that they give up, but unless you can tell that the rat being “jumped” is really in pain, let them fight it out). But if you like good lap pets, they’re the way 2 go.
Girls, on the otherhand, provide more entertainment and run around, romping and playing with one another and even your hand. I’ve had both, I prefer girls, but it’s harder to get them to sit still for longer periods of time. When they’re older, though, they make up for all the cuddling they didn’t do in the younger years.
Rats only live 2-3 years or so, so the lifespan is kind of a downer. If you don’t want such a long commitment, tho, it’s not really much of a problem.
Pine or cedar litter is very bad for rats and gives them respiratory probs. I use aspen litter, hasn’t given me any trouble yet.
Rats should be bought in pairs or groups of two or more and have a big enough cage with room for everyone to have their own little “getaway.” Ya know, in case one has a little pick with the other and wants to run off and sulk and lick their war wounds, which are perfectly normal. Sometimes, you might have to put a little hydrogen peroxide on their cuts, but mostly it’ll clear by itself.

Hope I helped some!

I never in my life thought I would have a pet rat and now I currently have 10. I love them all so much. There is tons of info available on the internet.
Rats are fairly easy to take care of. They are generally clean animals. Boys do smell worse than girls, but boys get bigger. I love my boys so much. I love all of my babies but my boys are friendlier.
For bedding, I use CareFresh. It’s good for them and for me because I have allergies. Their diet should consist of a seed/grain mix and lab blocks (the most nutritional block is one that doesn’t list corn as the first ingredient). They should have access to blocks at all times (but I don’t always go by this because my rats like to “dash and stash” their food). They need a water bottle as well.
They should have a large cage. Rats should be bought in same sex pairs (a typical litter is 8-12 babies–mine had 9). My rats have a cardboard tube called a “Chube” that they love and also kleenex boxes and paper towel tubes make great toys. My boy rats have a hammock that they all 3 sleep in. They LOVE it.
I hope you buy yourself a rat (or two). They are wonderful pets. I highly recommend them. They can even be trained to come to their names!!
Good luck!
