Need help asap!?

I have a 5 yr old female sugar glider. I found her a few minutes ago and she has ate her back end and tail raw. The nearest night vet is over an hour away. Can anyone give advice or any suggestion of what is wrong with her? She is not moving very much at all.

  5. sound like an irretated skin condition. make a cone to put around her neck, that will stop the chewing of herself. then a natural remidy would be aloevera plant sap, it conditions the skin, try washing her first in luke warm water then apply aloe or take her to vet. good luck

  6. unfortunetly she may have broken her back, sometimes they eat away at parts of their body that is not working. the only thing i can suggest is calling the vet’s office and seeing if they can give you any advice to the situation, always remember don’t do anything until you know from a professional what to do and how.

  7. Usually, this kind of chewing is associated with stress and over-grooming. I strongly suggest that you take her to an “experienced” sugar glider vet. Have her stool checked for parasites and have the tail, what’s left of it, examined. They can get some pretty bad infections and she may need to have a small portion amputated. It is not a good idea to leave it untreated. While she could have internal parasites, that does not usually cause tail chewing. Tail chewing usually occurs from stress or from over-grooming an injury. Perhaps an other glider bit her and she worked at it until she nearly chewed it off.

  8. The only experience I’ve had with a sugar glider doing this resulted in the animal being put down. The vet thought it was either a neurological or behavioral issue. Find an exotic vet that is experienced with sugar gliders if you don’t already have one. Until then, you can cut a milk jug into a cone… You may even want to take her pouch to bed with you so you can keep an eye on her. Also, the only thing that temporarily relieved my friends SG’s behavior was a cagemate. He had been doing it for a while before that (tried forever to figure out what it was) so it was only a temporary solution but, it may be worth a shot if the vet thinks it’s only behavioral.

  9. Sugar gliders have very specific dietary needs. Since you are saying she is five years old, I am guessing she got out and was running around the house awhile and then you found her? There are many things that can cause them to get sick but I wouldn’t know what to tell you. Even at sites that discuss sugar gliders, no one could tell you because there are many possible causes, but here is a glider site:

Maybe someone can suggest something that might save her life. I had two gliders, but they were in great health, never got sick so I don’t know what to suggest, but I knew when I got them how their diets had to be balanced a certain way and the gliders ate “sugar glider food” as well as dried crickets dusted with calcium, a supplement that went in their water, fresh fruit pieces (apple, mango, etc) fresh veggies. They ate gourmet meals daily! But they needed a specific balance. So here’s a site about their feeding and how improper diet can cause a lot of problems:

Hope these sites help you while you are trying to find a Vet!
I do know stress can do a number on them and also, not having a mate, as someone above mentioned. My two grew up together.
