i have a couple of sugar gliders and i have been having them for about 8 months but i hadn’t notice that they stink. My parent kept telling but i just didnt notice. I have them in a cage in my room but this morning my room smelled like a zoo or a lions cage. Its disgusting and bothersome. i dont want to get rid of them but is there anyway possible hat you can tell me what i can do for the smell not to be that strong or if they would survive in my backyard in their cage all day and night so they dont have to be smeling inside the house?
Gliders do have an odor that is unique to them, but I don’t think it is any stronger than the odor of a dog or cat. Some houses with dogs and cats in them smell badly, other houses you wouldn’t know there is a dog or cat in the house. Sugar gliders are the same way. However, intact male sugar gliders smell MUCH, MUCH, more than neutered males and they become especially smelly when they reach sexual maturity.

They wont survive in the backyard. Your best bet is to clean the cage 2times a week. Once every 3 days. When you clean the cage, male sure you rince the bottom out with boiling water, to clean away the smell / urine residue on bottom of cage
I agree with first poster. If their cahones are still intact…chop em off at the vet. Ak your vet about ideas to keep them better smelling. I just found a link for you its for SUGAR GLIDER DRY SHAMPOO (they shouldn’t be bathed in the traditional sence)

change the bedding inthe cage and wipe out the cage before putting clean bedding in it. Wipe gliders down with diaper wipes. Do this no less than once a week!!! Pets require care and cleaning them and cleaning up after them is crucial

you clean the cage and give them a dust bath also it might be what you are feeding them look up what they eat and see if that what you are doing but a dust bath should help

Dont give them a dust bath, they don’t naturally bathe that way and it could easily cause respitory problems.
An intact male will smell MUCH more distinct than a neutered or female glider. I added a male to my girls months ago and have noticed a significant increase in smell. As said before, neutering will pretty much eliminate this, if this is why yours are smelling a bit more.
Cleaning the cage TOO often can cause them to mark more, causing more smell. I usually do a deep cage clean every other week, and a daily wipe down. Take a cloth with hot water, or a water/vinegar solution and wipe everything down. Rotate out pouches and toys in between cleanings to keep them from wanting to scent mark more.
Diet plays a HUGE part in how they look and smell. I got a pair of girls that stunk to high heaven when I got them because they were eating pellets and apples – once they were put on a strict BML diet their color returned to normal (gray, not yellowish) and haven’t smelled since.
I would say absolutely do not house them outside. They are very sensative animals and a sudden temperature drop or increase could actually kill them, since their bodies aren’t designed to regulate temperature flux like that.

Sugar Gliders can, and are kept outside in aviaries in Australia. If you look at their native range you will see that they live in mountainous areas as well as more temperate coastal areas. The key would be to slowly aclimatise them to the outdoors. For information of keeping Glider that is written by folks that have been caring for them for a lot longer than they have been available in the US go to http://www.marsupialsociety.org
