my daughter wants a sugar glider, opinions?

my teenager wants a sugar glider. Is it true you have to have two gliders, and do they bite? Are the bites deep, and how much care does a glider need? help? She isn’t into messy pets, but she thinks these are cute.

All animals bite. You just need to teach them to treat it right and handle it with care.

  2. If handled often and I mean often they make great pets there sweet and love to be around you. however they jump around in there cage all night and if not handled often go feral. They are not a good teen pet. Get her a cat or something easy.

  3. They’re not very messy, unless you allow them to be by lack of keeping the cage clean.
They can bite, but if you get the gliders from a reputable breeder known to handle their joeys, then you should be OK.

They should DEFINITELY be in pairs, as they’re active when you’re likely to be asleep, and need the companionship of another glider to remain happy.
Like rats, there are the select few that thrive as a single, but they’re much happier with a glider companion.

Do research on gliders, such as here:

  4. I would suggest getting 2, all creatures need companionship and sugar gliders simply cannot relate to humans as well as they can to others of their kind.
All animals will bite if provoked.

  6. My advice to any parent who’s child wants pet is: “do YOU want a pet?” If the animal doesn’t end up being quite what your child wants, and they lose interest in it, are YOU going to be willing to take over looking after it, for the animal’s sake. Sugar gliders are very cute indeed, but what is she expecting to get from the pet? If she thinks it’s going to bond with her, and be a pet she can carry around & play with and have her friends handle etc, she is likely to be very disappointed. Sugar gliders aren’t a domesticated animal, and even when tamed, are never “pets” in the same way a rabbit, or kitten or puppy will be.
So, if you get one, be prepared for it to become YOUR own pet – if it doesn’t great, but just incase. If you don’t really want one of your own, see if you can’t talk her around to something else.

  7. I love kissy and tootsie

Some times they bite when you get them out but other then that they are normally good. The bites don’t hurt unless there mean. They will die of loneliness very easily. So more the better.
