If you can’t commit to the care right now, then you need to wait until you are done with college. It is not fair to the pet, and they are not easy to re-home into a place where the people know how to care and treat these animals. There are also not a lot of rescues that have places for them if you can’t find a home.

I suggest you wait until you are done with college, and have your own place so you will not have this dilemma.

As great as that sounds for you, i dont think that would be a good idea. The pet would have to get used to a new owner and it would like that at all. If you REALLY want a pet, you could try going to a college that allows pets in your dorm room! or you can have an apartment. I hope you make an exellent choice! : P

  3. You’re not going to like my answer, but you sound like an intelligent, well intended individual, so I’ll go ahead and post it anyhow.

First of all, let me say this – I think it’s absolutely wonderful you’re thinking ahead. It shows compassion and responsibility on your part. That said, it really doesn’t make sense to take in an animal knowing that you won’t be able to keep it for it’s entire life. It’s not fair to the animal to be passed around from hand to hand. They should find a forever home with someone just like you who is conscious of their needs and desires.

So how about this – maybe volunteer at your local shelter so you can at least be around animals. Maybe even consider fostering animals – I recently adopted two guinea pigs from a private rescue group that was in dire need of foster homes (ironically, my two pigs were surrendered b/c her owner couldn’t take them with her to college). Fostering would be a could compromise because you can take care of them for as long or as short as you need, and typically the rescue provides the cage and covers any medical costs you incur. You just need to supply the attention, food, and care. Check out Petfinder.com to find local rescue and shelter groups near you. Most shelters also have “pocket pets” along with cats and dogs. Good luck!

  5. When I was in college, I really wanted a pet, but it was the same thing, there was no one to take care of it when I was away at school. I knew I had to wait… and I know it sucks. But I did.

I actaully waited until I got an apartment and I started with something small (2 mice, with enough food and water, they were okay left alone on weekends) … now that I’m out of school and in my own place, I felt I could take care of something bigger, so I got a dwarf rabbit.

Having a pet is a huge responsibility, and as much as you want one, you don’t want something that you might be forced to give away because there’s no one to take care of it. You’ll wind up with a situation where you love your pet and don’t wanna give it away, but you’ll have to, you don’t want that. OR, maybe you could convince your parents to get a pet. :-)
