Where legal, the Sugar Glider is not difficult to breed in captivity under the right conditions, and small numbers have been legally and illegally exported to America where they have formed a breeding population for sale as pets. Breeding mills are a controversial subject. In the United States, keeping sugar gliders as pets is illegal in some jurisdictions, including California, Georgia, Hawaii, and Alaska; many other states require a permit.
The Sugar Glider is a popular pet because of its lively and inquisitive nature; with plenty of attention, it bonds well to human companions. It requires a special diet that includes vitamin and calcium supplements, and insects.

If you have oodles of time, patience and love, then yes it is a good pet for that. They not only need a ton of attention and mental stimulation (plenty of space and toys), but have very specific dietary needs and should only be allowed in “glider proofed” areas.
By glider proofed, I mean no exposed outlets or chords, no dishes or tubs of water (sink, toilet, animal water dish), nothing to get under like a couch or other heavy furniture, and no toxic materials (they are allergic to things like catnip and mint). I don’t let mine play in the house, I have a tent we go in for play time to make sure they stay safe.
For their diet, they need to be fed something that has been proven and widely used with a great rate of success. Sometimes providing this diet can be a daunting task. I feed a diet called BML – It is a blend of several ingredients not limited to but including egg, baby chicken food, baby cereal, wheat germ, honey, apple juice, specialty vitamins, ect. This all gets blended for a few minutes, then frozen in the freezer. They also get fruits and veggies every night, with mealworms for treats.
Also, these guys are completely nocturnal. Mine don’t get up until almost midnight, so you have to be williing to stay up late to play with them. You can still carry them in a pouch during the day, but they will sleep soundly for hours and hours as long as it is light out.
Sometimes sugar gliders can be hard to tame or bond with – some bond faster than others, some can take literally years. So as long as you are patient and ready for the commitment, they would likely make a great addition to your family

I would say unless you have done a lot of research about them they are not a good first pet, if that is what you are looking for. They do need a lot of attention and stimulation. They also need a very specific diet and it is best to get two at a time. In the wild these guys live in colonies and having one alone is not a good idea. These animals can be wonderful pets but they need an incredibly dedicated and knowledgable owner. If you think you still want one, do some research and make sure the one you buy is relatively tame because taming them can be very time consuming and exhausting.
