I want to know if a sugar glider is related to a rat/mouse?

I’m allergic to mice so I want to know if theres a relation and if there would be a possible reaction to them or if they are related to them but not to the point of being the same in allergic reactions, if that makes sense?

  1. Allergic reactions to animals are usually caused by the dander (tiny flakes of skin) or saliva (both wet and dried) that you inhale or touch. Some people are allergic to all dander-producing animals, and some are only allergic to one species or even just one breed of pet.

Rats and Mice are Rodents, whereas Sugar Gliders are Marsupials. Rodents and Marsupials are both Mammals, but that’s about where the similarities end. So yes, they are distantly related, just like people and dogs are distantly related. But the closeness of their relations might not make a difference, depending on your unique allergies.

Fortunately, I know from personal experience that sugar gliders don’t shed fur or dander nearly as much as rats and mice, so it’s not very likely that they will affect your allergies.

If you’re considering adopting a sugar glider, spend some time in pet shops handling them and exposing yourself to them before you get one. Remember that they can be complicated pets to own and they are not nearly as easy as rats and mice, so even if you’re not allergic to them, they might not be the best pet for you.

Another alternative to rats and mice could be chinchillas or short-tailed pygmy opossums. I LOVE short-tailed opossums.
Have you tried the hairless rats or mice?

Good luck to you! Feel free to email me if you have questions about any little animal. I’ve had just about everything. :P

No, they are marsupials they aren’t even part of the rodent family. However, there’s no guaranteeing you won’t be allergic to them. I’d go to a breeder or store and handle one for a while first to see if you have a reaction (if they are willing to let you).
