Try looking in the cat toy sections at local supermarkets and dollar stores. Not everything is going to be suitable for a sugar glider, but I’ve found a lot of my rabbit’s toys on the cheap by buying cat toys that suit his needs.
I used to have sugar gliders. They are so awesome. Mine liked the big blocky wooden things you can get for large birds that hang in the cage. Make sure they toy is hung securely and has a hook with a closure so your gliders won’t get hurt on it.
Mine also loved a plastic nesting box I had for them. They weren’t going to breed or anything, they just liked having a little house they could run in and out of. Their favorite toy had to be their Wodent Wheel. I had the 18″ size (still do actually).
The Wodent Wheel is safer than regular wheels and you can get sandy paper to go in them to help trim your gliders’ nails.
Don’t forget to supplement your gliders with calcium. I once almost lost mine because I believed the commercial food I was feeding was 100% (it said it was). We kept calcium powder and sprinkled it on their food. The vet said you can’t give them too much calcium orally. Their bodies will take in what they need and dispose of the rest.
Cat toys can actually be hazardous to your gliders, mainly because of the use of catnip in almost ALL cat toys. It doesn’t mention it on the packaging, so to be safe I avoid all cat toys (in case you weren’t aware, they are allergic to catnip and anything in the mint family).
I stick with ferret and bird toys. They LOVE feathers, and somethings you can find feathered things in the bird toys section. The little balls with bells in them made for ferrets dont have catnip, so I go for these too.
I make alot of my toys – one thing my kids haven’t gotten sick of yet is a ball pit. Take a container of some sort – I use a chinchilla dust bath house, minus the dust of course – and put a few handfulls of whiffle balls (I can get a pack of 6 or 10 at walmart for $1) in it. That’s it! They were kind of freaked out by it at first, but I left it at the bottom of their cage and a week later they were glued to it
Fleece is your friend! That and plastic hardware cloth. You can make a ton of toys dirt cheap with scraps of fleece and the hardware cloth. Here is a link to some easy no-sew toy and pouch ideas – Suz is a wonderful helpful person in the glider community, and the toys I’ve made off her site have been a big hit: http://www.suzsugargliders.com/nosewaccessories.htm
