anyone own/know how to handle sugar gliders??

so I just got a sugar glider about a week ago….and after about 2 days she seemed to have adjusted to us..(in the case of when we went to grab her or she wouldn’t bite) however, these past 2 days when I go to grab her she tries to bite me and jumps away?? My dog has been barking at which may be the reason she has become defensive??? but I don’t want her to become agressive…..she is just a baby now…how can I tame her or what should I do??

Sugar gliders are not meant to be pets and you should have a license to have these in some areas. I am a possum carer and we have a brush tail possum and 2 sugar gliders at the moment and they are are not meant to be treated as pets. We look after orphaned possum and wallabies and we eventually let them go when old enough, Do you have special milk for her if she is a baby? You can or can not tame wild animals that’s how they are, maybe she wants to sleep/play if she is becoming aggressive you should let her come to you and let her do what she wants ( unless shes doing something bad) but you cant tame sugar gliders sorry.

She might have a sore bone or something there shouldn’t be are reason for her becoming aggressive when going to get her. Contact a vet if you think theres something wrong with her ( eg broken bone or feeling sick) Thats could be one reason for this behaviour. You need your dog to stop barking first of all its frightening her.Take her into a queit room where theres no where to excape and let her run free take a piece of fruit ( they love bananas) and put it infront of ehr if he doesnt want it she doesnt want it. Make sure she can’t sqeeze under the doors or get stuck in any place of this room. Get something of yours something soft ( maybe a teddy bear or a facewash ( linen etc) and sleep with it one night and give it to her the next so she gets used to your smell, and also so she thinks your there with her. Andyou only need a permit in some areas, check it out make sure you don’t need a permit/lisense. ( you can get fined).if its just a baby it shouldn’t be biting unless it wasn’t handled much by the breeders, but it should be young enough to bond with you, work with it every day, and I mean EVERY DAY, it will take time, but it will be rewarding when you have a bonded glider. Make sure you have a big cage,( branches for them to climb around http://www.martinscages.com/images/full/sg-25.jpg that is a resonable sized cage for a possum, dont forgot branches fruit, natura leaves etc. this can efect their mood, also toys lots of toys make them happy, and switch the toys around every week. have about 3 pouches in there, and clean them alot, a messy cage = sick glider.

    Good luck!

  2. ok first you need the dogs to stop barking or get her into a room where its quiet, take it slow try getting her to eat a piece of apple or safe fruit from you, take her into a safe small room and let her loose, make sure she can’t get out, I like taking them into the bathroom, because its small, and at some point they have to jump on me, make sure she can’t sqeeze under the doors, or get into the toilet! another thing get a little piece of fleece and sleep with it, then put it in one of her pouches, it gets her use to your scent, another thing, get her into a bonding pouch, close it up, and carry her with you around yur neck alot, make sure you put her back in her cage so she can eat and drink, they get dehydrated easily. and yes they are good pets, and you only need a permit in some areas, check it out make sure you don’t need a permit. how old it your glider? if its just a baby it shouldn’t be biting unless it wasn’t handled much by the breeders, but it should be young enough to bond wiht you, work with it every day, and I mean EVERY DAY, it will take time, but it will be rewarding when you have a bonded glider. another thing is its cage big enough? make sure you have a big cage, this can efect their mood, also toys lots of toys make them happy, and switch the toys around every week at least. and have about 3 pouches in there, and clean them alot, et about six pouches, besides the bonding pouch, and every three days take the 3 pouches out of the cage and wash them, when you washing them put the other three in there, clean the cage often, a messy cage = sick glider. well I hope this helped if you have any other question please e-mail me and I will try and help. goodluck!!

ADD: flower power, they can be tamed, I don’t know what your talking about, but I had a glider that was so tame I could go down town and she would stay on my arm! and if it is a baby no good breeder would let the baby go unless it was at least 7-8 week out of pouch (oop) and the babies are called joeys..yes they make great pets, and yes they can and are tamed. thank you very much!

  3. Well first off dont jerk back from her. I know that sounds easier said then done but if you do she wins.

It takes alot of trust on their part to let you hold them. You should never just stick your hand in and try to grab her or chase her all over the cage. Your hand looks like a big monster trying to attack her she will try to scare you off by crabbing or biting. The easiest way of holding her is while she is in her pouch, take the pouch and roll her out of it into you hand. You may get bit if you stick your hand down into her pouch.

Play with her and hold her during the day , that is when she sleeps and is less active. Get you a bonding pouch and carry her around with you . Also try a play tent, I use a one person tent. Get in there with her and let her explore you.Give her little treats while you guys are in there. The love yogurt drops.

You can also take a piece of cloth, fleece is the best. Wear it inside your shirt for about 2 or 3 days and then place it in her pouch in her cage. I took an old t-shirt, slept in it for 2 nights and then cut it into pieces, put them in a zip lock bag and then changed out the pieces every couple of days.

If you have a single glider you will need to spend alot of time with her. She can become depressed and lonely and get sick. They alway do alot better if you have 2.

There is a wonderful site that has message boards and lots of info. It at….
